I had a great time at Orbit Live 2017. An Annual event organized by Aptech Limited in Mumbai.
In their words : “Over the years, Orbit Live has emerged as an interactive platform for students where they get to work closely with icons from the fields of animation, VFX, gaming, graphics & web designing. Students enjoy an exclusive opportunity to attend discussions & workshops conducted by top animation studios and work on live projects under their guidance.”
Day 1 / Seminar, Screening
On Day one, I gave a seminar on the Making of Schirkoa. I discussed the overview of each aspect, challenges and fun trivia while the 4 year journey of this film. At the end they screened the film. It was quite fun to interact with keen students and industry professionals after the screening.
Day 2, Panel Talks
An invite-only event for professionals in media & entertainment, ‘The Future of Media Entertainment Conclave’ was a B2B event hosted as part of Orbit Live 2017. This daylong event on Saturday, 4th February featured expert panellists bouncing ideas, and sharing insights into the future of technology, content, consumption & monetization in this exciting industry. I was part of the panel – “Emerging Trends in Indian Animation”.
Day 2/ Awards Ceremony
Later that evening there was a Bollywood style Grand Awards Ceremony. Full of colorful dances, performances and industry professionals, it was a rather unique cocktail. I was awarded ‘Pride of Indian Animation’ under the ‘Inudstry Honors’ category. Double Negative, MPC, MTV India, Youtube Kids were among the other award winners.
I will be giving a TEDx talk at BITS Pilani on 22 January. More at TEDxBITSPilani
While attending SIGGRAPH Asia at Macao, I was able to sit with Ian Failes, and chat about Schirkoa in detail. Here is the full interview.
ASIFA India (Hyderabad) celebrated International Animation Day a bit late. But for all the right reasons. They had a great bunch of speakers and hundreds of enthusiastic students on 4th January 2017 for a full day event.
It was fantastic to chat with Rajesh Sharma (Walt Disney Animation), Rajiv Chilaka (Green Gold Animation) and Dipak, Varun, Sreenivas & Sumoh (Cirqus Studio) between the talks and breaks. Big thanks to R K for inviting me to this beautiful event.
Discussing the making of Schirkoa along with a screening with the students and industry professionals went really well. And the standing ovation at the end was overwhelming. I thought I am just a guy who works on the computer whole day. But this was beyond words. Thanks to all the students who loved the film, appreciated the work and are now reeling to bring their own stories to life.
We had a wonderful time at Macao last week. Venetian Macao was full of grandeur and it really felt like the Mecca for Computer Graphics Community. We made so many good friends, explored some amazing technologies and attended some very insightful panels and talks. Not to mention the epic electronic theater with giant screen and thumping sound. Schirkoa felt incredible on that screen.
Thank you Shuzo, Victor, CAF Team, Ginger, the Abai and Asifa representatives from India, the Student Volunteers, and all the lovely artists we ran into.
It will go down as a cherished memory to walk on the stage and receive ‘Best in Show’ award for such a personal film ‘Schirkoa’. Later I also has a ‘Meet the Artist’ session where I talked about the behind the scenes of Schirkoa.
UPDATES ON SCHIRKOA
An update after so long. I have been mostly busy with Schirkoa’s blog and submissions. So here are some updates from past several months.
- Schirkoa made it to Oscar long list by winning the top award at LA Shorts. It didn’t make it to the final 10 though. It was the record breaking year in this category and being my first film, I am happy that it made it this far. I also got to know it is the first ever Indian animated short to ever make it to the Oscar long list in the history of Academy Awards.
- Schirkoa won ‘Best of Show’ at SIGGRAPH Asia Macao. Again a huge honor and first ever Indian animated short to ever win this award. I will be in Macao to receive the award and hold a talk on the making of the film.
- Schirkoa has been screened in over 35 festivals and won 16 of them so far. You can always head here for the most updated list.
- I have been working with an exciting Danish Metal band on their animated music video due for release next year. And after Schirkoa’s hangover, it some insane fun to work on. They are kind enough to give me a complete creative license and I can’t wait to share it when it’s done.
We attended the KLIK! Amsterdam Animation Festival last week at Netherlands. The festival was packed with hundreds of film screenings, art events, workshops and fun activities. We spent most of the time in the theater watching brilliant animation on the giant screen at the EYE Film Museum.
This was my first time watching Schirkoa on a cinema screen, and it looked and sounded epic. I am quite proud of it. Some snippets from the event below:
I have been updating Schirkoa’s (my upcoming short film) progress on CGTalk forum for a long time. Now that film has reached it’s completion it’s good to have a front page on CGTalk for a WIP thread. This is the 4th time it is on the CGTalk front page.
CG Trader has a cool gallery section now. Here is mine.
